Meet Yusuf Mohammed

Candidate for Medicine Hat City Council
About Me

My name is Yusuf Mohammed, and Medicine Hat has been home for more than 20 years. I’m a husband to my beautiful wife of 20 years, a father of three growing boys, and like many families here, I’ve experienced both the challenges and the beauty of building a life rooted in community, hard work, and hope for the future.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to serve Medicine Hat in various capacities—whether through coaching youth soccer, organizing local events, or assisting community members in navigating services. I’m also the founder of Lantern Glocal Co., a small consulting business here in Medicine Hat that supports organizations in building inclusive workplaces, strengthening communication, and planning for long-term success.

In 2006, I helped launch the Connection Intercultural Association to bring people together—from newcomers to long-time residents—so we can better understand each other and build a city that works for everyone. That belief—that we are better when we work together—continues to guide everything I do.

I’ve been fortunate to learn from both local and global experiences. I hold a Master’s in Global Management and a Bachelor’s in Communications, and I’ve worked across several continents in roles focused on leadership, education, and economic development. But no matter where I’ve been, Medicine Hat is the place that’s shaped me most.

Within The Community

I currently serve on the Medicine Hat College Board of Governors, where I support post-secondary growth and skills training in our region. I’ve also contributed to the Alberta Anti-Racism Advisory Council and previously served as Chair of the City’s Social Development Committee. Each of these roles has deepened my belief that leadership isn’t about titles—it’s about listening, building trust, and doing the steady, everyday work that makes a real difference.

Why I’m Running

I’m running for City Council because I care about the future of this city—our neighborhoods, our families, our small businesses, and our shared sense of belonging. I believe in practical solutions, respectful dialogue, and leadership that prioritizes people.

If I earn your trust, I will work hard every day to represent you with honesty, humility, and commitment.

Let’s build something meaningful together—for all of us.

Lead Together. Build Forward When we lead with humility and unity, we rebuild trust. This gives Medicine Hat the collective voice to secure the partnerships our city deserves. Rebuilding Trust Starts with Us Strong leadership is more than just holding office. It means showing up with clarity, consistency, and courage. Here in Medicine Hat, we’re at a turning point. Trust has been shaken. A recent municipal inspection called our governance “irregular,” and many residents felt unheard when city council turned down a motion for public complaints about senior staff. But we can’t move forward by focusing on what’s broken. We move forward by building something better, together. Real leadership isn’t loud; it’s effective. It’s not about who’s right, but what we can do right, together. As the African proverb says, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” It’s time we go […]
A Smarter, Fairer Local Economy for Medicine Hat It’s time to put people at the center of our economy—supporting small businesses, creating real job pathways, and investing wisely so every resident of Medicine Hat can build a future they believe in. Medicine Hat families are feeling the pinch, rising rents, job uncertainty, and less reliable utility revenue in a volatile market. Small businesses, especially those downtown, are still trying to bounce back from the pandemic and long construction projects. Rising costs like property taxes and utility fees make things even tougher. At the same time, young people are unsure about their future here. Employers are having trouble finding workers, and many job seekers, especially youth, are struggling to find steady, meaningful jobs. As a candidate for City Council, I believe it’s time to shift from reaction to renewal—by planning with purpose, forming stronger partnerships, and putting the people of Medicine […]
Powering Medicine Hat—For the People, By the People Our utilities were built by the people—let’s ensure they serve the people, with fairness, transparency, and a future-focused vision for every resident of Medicine Hat In Medicine Hat, our public utilities like gas, electricity, and water have always shown our local ownership, self-reliance, and community pride. But in 2024, things changed. Utilities usually bring in over 30% of the City’s income, but this year’s report shows a big drop. The City made $32.7 million less than expected, mostly because electricity and natural gas revenues fell by $63.2 million. The City doesn’t give one total for all utilities, but the numbers show they likely brought in about $140 to $145 million this year, compared to $225 million in better years. This is a big drop in a key source of revenue, and it’s understandable that many residents have questions: “If we still own […]
Smarter Growth, Stronger Communities Let’s build a Medicine Hat where every neighborhood thrives—by listening first, investing wisely, and planning with people, not just for them. Fair Growth, Real Results: Listening and Investing Across Medicine Hat Every neighbourhood in Medicine Hat—from Southview to Crescent Heights to Ranchlands—has its own energy, needs, and ideas for the future. But while some areas are booming, others feel left behind. The truth is: fair growth doesn’t mean equal spending everywhere—it means smart, transparent investment that reflects what each community actually needs. In 2024, the City identified 259 under-utilized parcels of land, and yet, barriers to infill still slow development. Residents continue to raise concerns about street safety, playground access, lighting, and rezoning decisions with minimal input. Meanwhile, downtown’s aging infrastructure and the Flats’ redevelopment needs remain under-addressed. So the question is: How do we grow in a way that makes sense for everyone—not just a […]
Well-Being Isn’t Extra—It’s Essential Medicine Hat is strongest when everyone belongs. From youth mental health to safer streets and inclusive recreation, our city’s well-being depends on smart investment, strong partnerships, and a shared commitment to equity. With bold ideas like a Downtown Wellness Coalition, Thriving Communities Fund, and a Citizen Well-Being Council, we can turn momentum into lasting impact—building a city where every resident feels safe, supported, and proud to call Medicine Hat home. From Crescent Heights to Southlands, families across Medicine Hat are calling for something simple yet powerful: a city that supports mental health, public safety, and a sense of belonging. And they’re right. A thriving community isn’t measured by buildings—it’s measured by how people feel in their neighborhoods. According to the 2025 Momentum Community Well-Being Plan, residents ranked social connection, access to services, and public safety as top priorities. The message is clear: well-being isn’t just a […]
Vote Yusuf Medicine Hat City Council
Medicine Hat is experiencing an aging population, increased retirements, and high unemployment, which puts pressure on core sectors such as healthcare, retail, and construction. There’s a growing gap between the skills local workers have and what employers need, especially in trades and technical roles. With Alberta expected to face a worker shortage by 2030, it’s crucial for the city to invest in job training, support local businesses, and welcome new citizens. Local solutions include aligning training with job demand, fostering entrepreneurship, and promoting Medicine Hat’s strengths. The blog calls for community action and conversation to help secure the city’s economic future. In my work with contractors, I sit down with small business owners and leaders who have been in business for decades in our community. I hear repetitive themes: “It used to be that we had too much work and not enough time. Now it’s too much work and not […]

It reminds us that in Medicine Hat, our local actions connect to global stories, and investing in youth today lays the foundation for a more resilient, vibrant tomorrow. From East Africa to the Prairies Eighteen years ago, I led 18 young adults from Medicine Hat to Kenya and Uganda. We built huts for families displaced in […]
Building Capacity Together: The Power of Equipping People for the Future Twenty years ago, I came to Medicine Hat with a simple goal: to build something meaningful for my family and the people around me. That goal led to The Connection, an initiative that helps young people, community organizations, and professionals develop the skills to lead, both locally and around the world. Through The Connection, we trained emerging leaders in cultural intelligence, sustainable development, and management strategy. We worked with local churches, nonprofits, and businesses, and also took young adults to Korea, Japan, and Uganda to work on global development […]
